Since Steve’s birthday and the Fourth of July all fell in one week (CLICK HERE FOR PICTURES), we decided to forgo work head to Sarah’s parents’ place in Twin Rocks. A little fuel got us going (see the Hildi with, “Me coffee”), coated our bodies in 50 SPF, dressed the kids in body suits fresh from Steve’s trip to London, and put out an umbrella for our red heads and lounge chairs for our dirty blondes.
Being the manly men they are, Finn and Steve built shelters and played with water guns. Being the womanly women they are, Sarah read magazines, and Hildi vacillated from smooching on her daddy to throwing huge temper tantrums. Backyard swinging was more amusing with funny faces and yelling, “Me no hands!” You’ll see what we mean in the pictures. Finn mastered the Green Machine, Hildi tried on the tricycle . . . and at night the boys would put on a fireworks show (which oddly put Hildi to sleep). Mid-week we drove Highway 101 north to Seaside, a beautiful drive that ended in fun shops (i.e. The Buzz Candy Shop, Crazy Hat Shop, video arcade), a carousel, bumper cars and a very dizzying ride Sarah agreed to get on with Finn. There we got supplies to decorate the Green Machine and the Beach Stroller for the big neighborhood 4th parade. Finn turned our found boxes into a drum set and instead Steve used misc supplies in the garage to create a “free shark” concoction for Finn and an All-American ride for Hildi. The kids helped decorate those and the cake for Steve’s 39th.
Sarah’s sister Kendra, mom, dad, grandparents, aunt, cousin and great aunt made it down for the Rockaway parade. It stared out dry, but then we got hit by the firemen and then by Mother Nature. The showers stopped in time for the neighborhood parade where Papapa showed that at 86 he could still give a 5.5 and 61 year old a run for their money in an impromptu race. Later that night we hung out on the beach and watched over 20 beach fires and the “independent” fireworks displays start. We fit in pretty well with the “trailer folk” with our temporary tattoos and spiked drinks. When the rain moved in the next morning we moved out and had a few lazy days at home . . .
